Made To Love

Alright people I’m just going to make this simple. I love to love. I truly feel like I as an individual was made to love. Some have told me that’s not really a “thing” but I like to think otherwise. It is my strongest (and at times it has been my weakest) trait.

I always have and always will firmly believe that when in doubt you just have to add a little love to it. So I do. Every single day I make it a point to say “I love you” to someone in my life without even speaking those three words. With time I’ve learned that there are so many ways that you can say I love you, it just comes down to whether or not the receiving individual is able to hear it.

So, lets take a break from that discussion so that I can make a quick point about today: It’s really kind of weird to me that people who are single get so down on themselves on Valentines day. Is the day not about love? Do you not have any in your life? If not, create it. Self-love, google it. Family and friends? Yah go squeeze the shit out of them, it feels really good I promise. Love is so much more than flowers, chocolate, and diamonds on a random day in February. Don’t dwell on the fact that it may be lacking. Just make it happen. You deserve it.

So, since today is “love-day” I vow to celebrate the ridiculous amount that I am blessed to have in my life. My family and friends make my world go ’round. And I’m going to do my very best to remind them of that.

So if and when you feel kind of bummed today do this: Slow down, take a big deep breath, focus on what you have and repeat after me: life is not about what I can get, it is about what I can give.

And hopefully your heart will feel a little lighter, your world a bit brighter, and your soul will stir with ideas of how you can bring more love into the peoples lives around you. Which, in the most badass way ever, will bring more love into your life in return. How about that for a thought? It’s a win-win babe. I’m tellin’ ya. Love is kind of magical like that. So please, have a beautiful day, kick ass, hug lots of peeps alright?

All my love, cheesy thoughts (and 20-something thoughts) on love until next time,

XOXO, B

It’s How You See Yourself

“Your job is to see people as they really are, and to do this, you have to know who you are in the most compassionate possible sense. Then you can recognize others.” -Anne Lamott

Do you understand? Read it twice. Love every inch of yourself. Embrace every good part and every bad part about you — do it without making up excuses. Be humble. Be gentle. And then it will all begin to make sense.

XOXO, Bailey Mikell

Toothless Grin

I enjoy finding beauty in an average day. There are so many moments that take my breath away, and sometimes it feels like there isn’t enough space in my heart to hold them all at once. It’s like I’m turning into some kind of happy-moment-hoarder and I need an outlet. That’s when I remembered: I have this blog where many of my deep, and sometimes silly, thoughts quietly drift. Brace yourself, this shit is about to get pretty happy.

Almost everyday after work I walk to FedEx to drop transcripts off for my students. It’s about 3 blocks from my office and I have experienced a handful of “downtown moments” since I started doing this. Moments where I have conversations with strangers that often leave me with a smile on my face and a skip in my step. But I had a special day last week where I felt bombarded with things that made my heart swell, so I thought I’d share one and maybe even make it a habit if I’m lucky.

A windstorm had come through the city late that afternoon and it shook the windows in the office. Thick black storm clouds hovered over the tall buildings, and litter was lifted into the air. But it was 5:00 and I had to get my students transcripts mailed before I went home. So I slipped through the glass door of the building I work in and braved the strong gusts. I had a silky black dress on with a white stripe down the middle, it buttons all the way up and I keep it at the end of my clothes rack with my “feel good” dresses.

But I felt far from good as the wind tried to sweep me one way and my dress the other. My hair felt like it was stuck between a cheap blowdryer on high and my lipstick smeared lips. Halfway to FedEx my fingers began to hurt from having such a tight grip on the documents I was delivering and the pyrex bowl tucked tightly between my arm and side. But I instantly forgot about all of these messy details when I exchanged a few words with a man that stood next to me waiting for the crosswalk to be clear.

I asked him how his day was going and he responded with a swift run on sentence (my kinda guy). He told me how incredible his day was. Before I could ask why he was so happy he went on to tell me that he has been having surgeries on his shoulder for almost 5 years. Doctors could not ease the pain and it was one problem after the other, but today was different. He got his Xrays back and found out that he’ll never have to have another surgery again. We began to walk. He pulled out his Xrays and showed them off with a huge grin on his face. I complimented them the best I could and tried to add to his endorphin rush, but that’s just simply hard to top.

We went our separate ways shortly after that, but the 30 seconds of bliss he shared with me had a consuming effect on my attitude. I had this dorky smile on my face all the way to my car and the wind suddenly changed and blew my worries away. Sure, the day was filled with garbage (literally) and my bum may have been revealed when the wind lifted my dress. But I’m thankful for that man, and I’ll never forget his toothless grin. He made that downtown moment an experience I’ll always treasure and my appreciation for my healthy body feel so much more present. So shine on, sweet man. I hope you feel strong enough to swoop your grandchildren in your arms without an ounce of pain.

She Fought with Fervor and Great Love

Being raised by a single mother helped me build a strong connection with women who refuse to sit back & be quiet while others make decisions for them. At a young age I was taught how rewarding it is to be independent & work hard for the life that you want to live. My mother also surrounded me with women who celebrate themselves & those they love — women who fight for what they believe in & aren’t willing to settle.

I am not here to say that what I believe is right & what you believe is wrong — I am here to say that each individual has the power of choice & the freedom to express themselves. This world is beginning to hush what needs to be heard & hide what we have the right to see. I believe that if each of us makes the commitment to stand tall when we discuss our passions, speak steady when we express our concerns & be strong when people claim that our voices are weak we can show just how far  one dream can take us.

This is the kind of woman I aspire to be & can become. And I love that. My country may not be perfect but I am thankful that it allows me to attack even the smallest challenges with fervor & great love. I hope you do the same.

I am here for a reason & I won’t wait around for someone to tell me what it is. I shall strive to make a difference in just one persons life, an unforgettable one.

“European Member of Parliament, Licia Ronzulli (an MEP from Italy), took her seven-week old daughter, Victoria, to work at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. [It was not a ‘Take-Your-Child-to-Work’ event.] She kept her baby carefully cradled against her in a wrap and occasionally leant to kiss her on the forehead. This photo was taken as she voted on proposals to improve women’s employment rights and was broadcast and published in newspapers around the world.”

Thank you for being brave Licia Ronzulli.

The Vow

“I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness and to have the patience that love demands, to speak when words are needed and to share the silence when they are not and to live within the warmth of your heart and always call it home.”

I Spy

I adore this DIY clutch from I Spy DIY

Sometimes you don’t need a big bag when you’re at a cocktail party. A clutch is perfect for those kind of events or a day out on the town.  This is super easy to do & inexpensive. Get to it, babes!

Oh, and for the love of god, please paint your nails/fix any chips. If you don’t that will be one of the first things people see. I am guilty of this in the past until I realized how awful it looks and how fun it is to try new nail styles.

xoxo

I also love both of these clutches
