The art of flying within

Sometimes when I’m going really fast on my rollerblades I close my eyes & let the hot air flow through my fingertips. I imagine I’m flying instead of overanalyzing the situation & fearing what everyone watching me thinks. Their judgements do not scare me — forgetting what it feels like to truly be alive does.

With that said, I encourage you to stop & think about who & what you are living for… and if it isn’t for yourself, then maybe it’s time to purchase some rollerblades & pretend to fly. Trust me, it feels better than it sounds. And it’s always fun to have an excuse to rock some tube socks while you blast your favorite tunes. Call me crazy, but sometimes I simply need to pick a different type of noise to block out all of the nonsense I tend to fill my head with. What are some things you do to get to your “happy place”?

When Things Get Heavy

One of my biggest flaws is not paying enough attention to detail (always has been) but I’m working hard to make sure it will not always be. I’m learning life is easier when we stop running away from our personal flaws.. or even worse, ignoring them. I’m not saying I accept the fact that I drove to Idaho this morning because I missed the exit I take to get home on a regular basis (too much on my mind + Romans neat perma-meow/panting the whole way home didn’t help)… Alls I’m sayin’ is I’m not going to beat myself into the ground because of it  (route B was much prettier anyway) My point is that mistakes do not erase our self-worth, they teach us lifelong lessons that increase it bit by bit. This is, of course, as long as we choose to learn from the bumps in the road instead of letting them throw us off track.

I guess what I’m trying to say is a little bird is telling me one of you may need to be reminded that you’re incredible, and you probably don’t even know it. Be soft with yourself, sweets. You’re just learning and the books only get heavier from here. Get some reading glasses that you feel like a babe in & get to studying, darlin. It’s a long, windy, beautiful & sometimes ugly road ahead. (Don’t tell your mum I said this) but sometimes I get so busy keeping my heart active that I forget to use my brain — and I don’t see a damn thing wrong with that.

You Will Be Stronger

You had me second guess myself so many times that I’d be surprised to find a single doubt within if you asked me to look today. You led me astray more times than I chose to count. I fell flat on my face but I didn’t ever give up. My phone bill teetered towards overage charges for the first time since high school; I sobbed to my mum so many times our plan couldn’t keep up, yet somehow she always did. It’s been since I said farewell to my childhood that my lips have trembled like they did during this month. I crumbled in situations that I’d usually be holding down.

And sometimes, if the stars aligned just right, I’d be at the end of a gut-wrenching day doing my best to catch my breath & I would suddenly find myself in an opulent moment. After letting those sporadic moments of bliss amongst blur confuse me for a while, I started using them as fuel: I knew if I consistently fought until I couldn’t anymore I’d start to see results. Slowly but surely, things began making sense.

April, I know we didn’t always see eye to eye, but our 30 days of trial & error together splashed color on my white walls & infused a deep appreciation within. Thank you for kicking me in the ass even though I was usually still trying to get up from the last time. And, thank you for teaching me how to be strong even when I am alone. I reached out to my incredible loved ones a lot, to say the least, but whenever a new situation arose I had to learn to adjust (still learning how)

I guess I’ve decided that a firm reality check isn’t always the sweetest cup of tea, but it sure does make a pretty little promise — that this too shall pass, and when it does, you will be stronger.

All my love until we meet again next year, xoxo, your little warrior

Wiggle Your Nose Back n’ Forth

love genie jars. When I saw this on Pinterest, I think I got a little more excited than the average person… But this is nothing new.

Do you love Genie jars? If so, where is your favorite place to go to find them? I adore this website, 1stdibs. Even if you browse their online shop just to get inspiration, I still love it because they have a nice variety. Pier1 is also a great place to find little trinkets and treasures such as those pictured above. If you’re feeling adventorous, make a day of thrifting & look for them while at your local thrift shops. You can get things for a better price, and it can be fun having some DIY projects with things you didn’t pay much for but saw potential in (my thrifting-partner, Kelsey Loraine, is hardcore. We don’t mess around… well I do, but she doesn’t)

I know you really wish you could just wiggle your nose & squint your eyes like Bewitched & have all of these appear — or if you’re not into that, you can always fold your arms across your chest, blink, and dip your head like Jeanie.  People may or may not see me do this often… I usually just don’t really try & explain. Don’t mind me, I’m just pretending to be a genie over here. Continue on…

Kissing Strangers

Happy Sunday my sweets! I am spending my time wisely today by checking things off of all my lifesaving-lists. One of my to-do’s this morning was ‘make sun tea’ :)

Even though I haven’t been writing new posts I’m still trying keep things interesting around here. I mean, we’ve been together for over a year… I can’t just blow you off like that, you know? I’ve been posting different things that I find inspiring, helpful, or just share-worthy on Commander In Chic’s FaceBook page. I also tweet regularly & you know I am always on top of my Instagram game. So pop on over and join the mid-study celebrations my friend!

Today I shared a delicious recipe for: balsamic grilled summer vegetables with basil and quionoa salad. Ew. Did you just drool on your yourself/laptop?… Sicko. (I did too)

There are also directions for cleaning your nasty ass washing machine — I did it today & could not be happier or more weirdly-excited to bust out my laundry. Trust me on this one, detailing washing machines is easier than it sounds (and yes, it’s a real thing, to all the smartasses reading this laughing at my laundrycitement ;)

I’ll begin replying to your kind words this evening!! This is my favorite part because if I wanted to talk to myself I would……. And well, sometimes I do. But you’re much more fun anyway. Our discussions are important to me, which is why I believe in setting aside some time to maintain them. As you know, hearing from you is one of the most rewarding things to me. Let it out babydoll!

Anywho, it’s game time and my Giants are about to show ya how it’s done. Tune in folks… Oh, and I will also be mourning Brian Wilson’s injury/season-destroyer. Whether it’s in action or not, I still fear the beard/have dreams about it that we don’t talk about on here. Smooching and missing the hell out of you! Even if we don’t even ‘know each other’………… at all. :)

xoxo, Bee

A delicious day + a recipe to tag along

My morning has been close to perfect. I have decided that the only person who has the power to shape the way my day goes is me. I am the only one that can set the tone in my life. Plus I have a commitment to all of you: Provide inspiration, not soppy shit. So when I woke up early to make a quick trip to Salt Lake for an appointment but had to cancel (bad weather) I kept calm & called my docta. After that I educated myself about KONY2012, ordered my action pack, paid the bills & did some budgeting. I also talked to Jani on twitter because she always makes me happy. Here are some ways (click the text) to take control of your day that I think are fantastic.

Then Roman and I danced around the kitchen while I made brunch. Alright, Roman actually rolled around in the sun, but that’s helping in my world. I love seeing him so happy in his new home. I am doing my best to not post ridiculous amounts of photos of him because I know that EVERYBODY isn’t a cat whisperer like me… BUT I am teaching him to play fetch and had to post a video on youtube. Personally I think it’s hilarious because he drags his feather back to me while I blog (multi-tasking at its finest). If you want to watch it feel free by going here.

I’m fully aware that I’m a crazy cat woman & getting worse by the minute, no need to point out the obvious to me:)

While our brunch was divine (turkey bacon rocks my world), this one takes the cake… Shaved Butternut Squash & Caramelized Onion Pizza with Goat Cheese on whole wheat crust. I want to make this for dinner soon because it’s fairly healthy but packed with flavor. Click the photo to get the recipe.

I am off to bask in the sun while I enroll some high school dropouts. Thank you universe, for providing me with such a gorgeous day, I needed this. Now please go make everybody else’s day just as delicious. You deserve it, my loves. Smooches & squeezes, Bee

“Never forget the dexterous & deft”

In honor of  Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday, also known as Dr. Seuss, I wanted to post my favorite quote by him. Shortly after I began the search for “my favorite” I realized I was being foolish to think I could stand to pick just ONE.

My aunt Kerry & cousin Kimberly would read his books to me at grandmas when I was wee, I read them to Talya and Zeb, and I still sneak away to the children’s section at the bookstore to get a chapter or two in. His message speaks to souls of every age and that, I believe, is what made him brilliant. Thank you for painting the trials of life with every color imaginable. Here’s to you, Mr. Geisel. Happy Birthday

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own.
And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

“You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.”

“All alone! Whether you like it or not, alone is something you’ll be quite a lot”

The second one is really beautiful to me. I find that a healthy amount dose of alone time (when spent doing positive things) is very rewarding. In my opinion it’s an excellent way to find yourself over & over again without paying a dime for a therapist ;)

“It has often been said
there’s so much to be read,
you never can cram
all those words in your head.

So the writer who breeds
more words than he needs
is making a chore
for the reader who reads.”

Last but not least the quote that hits close to home for all writers. I believe being a powerful writer means packing a punch with a small amount of words. This is something I (obviously) have to work on every single day.
